70 years of CERN: Celebrate with us!
For the 70th birthday of the famous European nuclear research center CERN in Geneva, we are celebrating a whole week in the light of particle physics at the University of Bonn in the week from September 16 to 20. We invite you to celebrate with us and offer a colorful program of science slams, particle physics shows and a concluding symposium on CERN in Bonn.
CERN was founded after the Second World War by a handful of leading European scientists and diplomats with the aim of bringing excellence in scientific research back to Europe and promoting peaceful cooperation between nations. Today, CERN has 23 Member States, ten Associate Member States and a vibrant community of 17,000 people representing more than 110 nationalities. CERN is preparing to continue this inspiring journey of exploration, as many mysteries of the fundamental nature of the universe remain to be unraveled.

Science Slam - "Particle Poetry" - Science in the Spotlight

The world is full of interesting and exciting things, but they are often beyond us. We would like to understand how the complex machines that move our world work. For most people, modern research borders on wonderful magic, which often seems to raise more questions than it answers.
But not for us! “Particle Poetry” is a science slam that aims to get to the bottom of complicated questions in a simple way.
Be entertained by a series of witty, exciting and highly interesting talks on topics you never thought you understood!

Particle Physics Show "Whats the matter"
14.- and 15.09.2024
“Whats the matter” is a play by Physikshow Bonn that accompanies the protagonists on a journey through the history of particle physics. They start in Bonn and travel to important scientific milestones with the help of magic umbrellas: in 1911 in Manchester they experience Ernest Rutherford's discovery of the atomic nucleus, in 1952 in Berkeley Professor Lawrence explains particle accelerators and antimatter, and in 1980 in Hamburg they learn about quarks and gluons from Sau Lan Wu. Their last stop takes them to CERN, where they are shown the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the discovery of the Higgs particle, before seeing a Higg particle themselves. The physics show is aimed at all ages and admission is free.

Symposium on the occasion of CERN's 70th birthday
On Friday, September 20, 2024, we will conclude the celebrations with a symposium on the topic of CERN. We have prepared a program for the afternoon and evening and cordially invite all interested parties to join in the celebrations.
16:00-18:00 Meet-a-Scientist and barbeque
At 16:00, the program starts at the Research and Technology Center Detector Physics with the “Meet-a-Scientist” event. At “Meet-the-Scientist” you will have the opportunity to talk to scientists from the University of Bonn and CERN and ask questions about research. What was that again about the Higgs boson? How fast do particles fly in Geneva? What are we actually researching in Bonn? All these questions can be answered in a relaxed atmosphere. There will also be guided tours of various laboratories, an augmented reality installation and sausages and drinks.
18:00-20:00 Symposium "Rhein nach Genf"
The symposium will take place in the Wolfgang-Paul Lecture Hall at the University of Bonn. The topics and presentations are explicitly aimed at the general public and interested questions to the speakers are welcome in the planned Q&A sessions. We have invited three speakers from different research disciplines to the symposium to give you an overview and insight into the world of CERN:
Prof. Dr. Klaus Desch will talk about the “History, achievements and plans of CERN”.
Prof. Dr. Manuel Drees will talk about “Particles and the Universe”.
Prof. Dr. Ingrid Gregor will talk about “Giant cameras - particle detectors”.
20:00-22:00 Birthday party: 70 years of CERN
We are celebrating 70 years of CERN and of course a birthday cake is a must. After the symposium, we will toast and cut the cake. We cordially invite you to join in the celebrations.
