Insight into particle physics: pupils analyze LHCb data and explore laboratories at the University of Bonn Insight into particle physics: pupils analyze LHCb data and explore laboratories at the University of Bonn

On January 22, students from the upper secondary school of the Gymnasium Hennef-Meiersheide received exciting insights into experimental particle physics and current research at the LHCb experiment at the Research and Technology Center Detector Physics. The masterclass, organized by Prof. Sebastian Neubert's working group, offered lectures, an in-house data analysis, laboratory tours and a joint visit to the cafeteria and was carried out in cooperation with Netzwerk Teilchenwelt and the student laboratory at the University of Bonn.

On January 22, twelve high school students took part in a particle physics masterclass on the LHCb experiment at the University of Bonn's Research and Technology Center for Detector Physics. A masterclass is a one-day workshop consisting of lectures and hands-on activities in which the participants themselves become researchers and thus gain an authentic insight into scientific work.

The participants from the Q1 and Q2 physics courses at Gymnasium Hennef-Meiersheide gained exciting insights into experimental particle physics and current research at the LHCb experiment in Bonn.

The master class was developed and carried out by Prof. Sebastian Neubert's working group as part of Netzwerk Teilchenwelt. The day began with introductory lectures on particle and hadron physics, followed by a small data analysis session on the PC in the afternoon. The program was supplemented by laboratory tours and a joint visit to the canteen.

The event was organized in cooperation with Netzwerk Teilchenwelt and the student laboratory of the University of Bonn.

The next LHCb Masterclass will take place on April 11, 2025 at the Research and Technology Center Detector Physics at the University of Bonn. This time as the International Masterclass “Hands on Particle Physics”. Participants will once again gain exciting insights into experimental particle physics, carry out their own data analyses and then discuss their results in an international video conference with other research institutes. **Teachers can register interested pupils from grade 10 upwards for the event here until February 28, 2025.
