Particle café with Dr. Slavomira Stefkova and the Physics Brawl award ceremony Particle café with Dr. Slavomira Stefkova and the Physics Brawl award ceremony

On January 23, 2025, the Particle Café for interested pupils and students took place in Bonn. Our guest this time was Dr. Slavomira Stefkova, who told us about her exciting path in science. We also honored the regional winners of the “Physics Brawl” competition for their achievements.

At this particle café, there was the opportunity to talk to Dr. Slavomira Stefkova over coffee and cake in a relaxed atmosphere. For her doctorate at Imperial College in London and CERN in Geneva, Slavomira Stefkova analyzed data from the LHCb experiment and investigated B+ decays in muons. She then took up a DESY fellowship in Hamburg in 2018 and moved to the Belle II experiment in Japan. After a further postdoc in Karlsruhe, she has been a substitute professor at the University of Bonn since summer 2024. Her research interests include B-meson decays in kaons and missing energy at the Belle II experiment in Japan.

There were many questions about her path to particle physics, but technical questions were also discussed and answered. The exciting talks were accompanied by delicious apple pie (thanks to Justin), cookies, coffee and tea.

The awards ceremony for the regional “Physics Brawl” competition took place in the second half of the event. “Physics Brawl” is an international competition in which students interested in physics collect points in teams by solving various physics problems. The best regional teams were guests at the Particle Café and were celebrated with certificates and prizes. In addition to quark puzzles and jute bags, all invited teams can look forward to a joint excursion to one of the largest telescopes on earth, the Effelsberg radio telescope. A private guided tour will be organized there, taking the students to places that otherwise only scientists get to see. The regional competition was initiated by Andreas Poll (Jugenddorf Christophorus Schule Königswinter) in cooperation with the Netzwerk Teilchenwelt Bonn.

The Particle Café takes place in Bonn about 4 times a year. The announcement for the next particle café will be made via this website, as well as via our Instagram. We are looking forward to all interested visitors.
