Physics/Astronomy for the general public and school
The work of the Physics/Astronomy Department of the University of Bonn is intensively accompanied by public relations work aimed at students and the interested public.
On this page you will find an overview of the outreach offers for different target groups. For most topics, detailed information is available only in German.
Below you will find at which events you can get an insight into the exciting world of physics.
Physics show
The physics show presents entertaining and educational physics experiments in a clear and easy-to-understand way. The show is aimed at all children from 12 to 99 years.
Public lectures
Lectures for the interested public on current research topics are part of the regular program of the zdi-Schülerlabor Physikwerkstatt Rheinland.
Exhibitions
At exhibitions and fairs, the Physics/Astronomy Department regularly shows its research to the general public.
Young people and children can discover the world of physics at many events of the zdi-Schülerlabors Physikwerkstatt Rheinland.
Bonn School Academy Physics/Astronomy
From 10th grade
During the summer vacations, the physics/astronomy department invites students from the upper secondary school to get an insight into various fields of physics and astronomy. The Academy is organized by the zdi-Schülerlabor Physikwerkstatt Rheinland with the kind support of the Stiftung für Physik und Astronomie in Bonn.
Girls'Day
From 5th grade
Every year, girls have the opportunity to discover careers in technology, IT, crafts and the natural sciences on Germany's Girls' Day. The zdi-Schülerlabor Physikwerkstatt Rheinland also participates with events for schoolgirls from 5th grade.
International Masterclass "hands on particle physics"
From 10th grade
Every year, research institutions around the globe open their doors and invite students from the 10th grade upwards to try their hand as particle physicists for a day. The University of Bonn also participates with several events, which are organized by the zdi-Schülerlabor Physikwerkstatt Rheinland.
International Cosmic Day
From the 10th grade
Every year, interested school students are invited to research institutions to spend a whole day exploring the world of cosmic radiation. The University of Bonn is also involved in organizing such events.
At many event formats, young people and their teachers can learn about current developments in physics and astronomy research. At the same time, schools in the region are supported in teaching modern and classical physics and astronomy so that students can imagine what to expect in their studies.
Excursions
From 9th grade
For excursions by school classes and physics courses, the zdi-Schülerlabor Physikwerkstatt Rheinland offers an exciting program consisting of guided experiments, a visit to a lecture and a tour of research laboratories.
Particle Physics Masterclasses
From 10th grade
Particle Physics Masterclasses of "Netzwerk Teilchenwelt" are project days led by young scientists of the Bonn physics department. The focus of the event is the analysis of current data from particle physics experiments.
ELSA-Facility Tours
From 11th grade
The electron stretcher facility (ELSA) includes an electron accelerator and various experimental facilities for basic research. Interested high school classes can take part in a guided tour of the accelerator facility.
MILeNa
High school students
MILeNa is a program to promote the next generation of STEM teachers. It is aimed at high school students who are interested in studying for a STEM teaching degree and gaining an insight into the professional field of a teacher.
Supervision of school internships and student research projects
Netzwerk Teilchenwelt offers high school students various opportunities for project days or (research) internships in the field of experimental particle and detector physics.
Lending of school experiments
Experiments from the zdi-Schülerlabors Physikwerkstatt Rheinland can be borrowed by schools or used by students as part of school projects.
Physics for our youngest
To stimulate and encourage children's scientific curiosity, we have developed various programs that we demonstrate in daycare centers and primary schools.
The zdi-Schülerlabor Physikwerkstatt Rheinland participates in many event formats for students that are centrally organized by the University of Bonn.
Bonner Hochschultage
At the Bonner Hochschultage, prospective students can find their way around the campus and get all the information they need to make a good study decision at first hand.
Dr. Hans Riegel-Awards
Together with the Dr. Hans Riegel-Stiftung, the University of Bonn awards the Dr. Hans Riegel Prizes. The prizes are awarded to the three best theses submitted in the upper grades of a school year in the subjects of biology, geography, mathematics, chemistry, physics and computer science.
Early study program
As part of the Fördern, Fordern, Forschen (FFF) project of the University of Bonn, high school students can attend regular university courses. Click on the link below to find out which courses are suitable to start a physics or astronomy study program!
